مکانیک آماری ابزاری قدرتمند است بر پایه مکانیک هامیلتونی و آمار ریاضی که به واسطه آن میتوان خواص فیزیکی ماده در همه حالتهای جامد، مایع و گاز را بر مبنای رفتار دینامیکی اجزاء سازنده میکروسکوپی تشریح نمود. دامنه شمول مکانیک آماری از این هم فراتر رفته و بررسی انواعی از سیستمهای مواد از قبیل مواد چند فازی و نمونههای زیستی در همه حالتهای تعادلی و غیر تعادلی نیز بوسیله آن فراهم شده است. بنابراین، با توجه به دامنه شمول و گستردگی مفاهیم در مکانیک آماری به نظر می_رسد که کسب دانش مکانیک آماری ولو در مفاهیم و مباحث بنیادی آن برای دانشجویان رشته فیزیک و رشتههای مرتبط با آن حیاتی و ضروری باشد. این هدف در کتاب حاضر با بهره گیری از زبانی ساده و سلیس به نحوی که مفاهیم بطور موثری به خواننده منتقل شوند، دنبال شده است.

Statistical Mechanics explores the physical properties of matter based on the dynamic behavior of its microscopic constituents.
